Practical guide

Getting around Tangier

Central Tangier is best explored on foot. Otherwise, take a petit taxi in town and a grand taxi to leave the city.

The essentials in 30 seconds
  • The medina, the Kasbah and Boulevard Pasteur can be done on foot.
  • Petits taxis are turquoise with a yellow stripe: ask for the meter from the start.
  • For Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, you need a grand taxi or a car.
  • Airport bus: 40 DH in cash, according to two sources from 2024 and 2025.

On foot

The medina is pedestrian and the Kasbah is at the top: wear good shoes, the lanes climb and are cobbled. From the Grand Socco to the Petit Socco takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Petits taxis

Tangier's petit taxis are turquoise with a yellow stripe. They run within the city and use a meter, which must be switched on at the start. It is common to share the ride with other passengers.

Published sources contradict each other on the minimum fare: 5 dirhams according to Bladi.net (26 April 2025), which reports that drivers are asking to raise it to 7 dirhams; 7 dirhams according to le360.ma, which announced this increase in June 2022. The current fare therefore needs checking.

No official night fare is documented here: in April 2025, drivers were in fact asking for one to be created (Bladi.net). Always ask for the meter and keep some change.

Grands taxis and cars

Grands taxis link the centre to outlying sites such as Cape Spartel. Agree on the return fare and the waiting time before getting in. This fare is not documented here.

Airport and city centre

Bus line AE (run by ALSA) links Ibn Battouta Airport to Tanger Ville station. The ticket costs 40 dirhams, paid in cash on board, according to Bladi.net (June 2024) and a traveller's account valid in May 2025 (philipmallis.com).

According to the same account, a bus leaves every hour from 6:30 am to 12:30 am on weekdays from the station; weekend and public holiday times are not confirmed.

Stops announced in 2024: Al Hassani complex, Riyad Ahlan, Ben Dibane, avenue Moulay Ismaïl and Nejma roundabout. Check the time of the last departure when you arrive; otherwise take a taxi in front of the terminal, agreeing the price before getting in.

Train

Tanger Ville station is the terminus of the Al Boraq high-speed train to Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca. According to Seat61 (accessed 16 October 2026), the journey to Casablanca takes about 2 h 10, with one departure an hour from 6 am to 7 pm, then at 9 pm, for 99 to 224 dirhams in 2nd class and 129 to 292 dirhams in 1st, depending on the date. Prices change with booking: check them on oncf-voyages.ma.

For Asilah, a regional train takes about 45 minutes, with a departure roughly every 4 hours according to Rome2Rio (accessed 16 October 2026).

Coaches to nearby towns

The CTM company links Tangier to Tetouan in about 1 hour (6 departures a day) and to Chefchaouen in 2 h 15 to 2 h 35 (5 departures a day, the last listed at 4 pm). Online prices: €3 to €4 for Tetouan, €8 to €9 for Chefchaouen. These figures come from Omio, for departures on 16 and 17 October 2026; they change with the date.

Ferries to Spain

Tanger Ville port, at the foot of the medina, receives the ferries from Tarifa: about 1 hour's crossing and 5 to 15 departures a day in 2026, with Baleària and Africa Morocco Link, according to Ferryhopper (article of 30 December 2025). Tanger Med port, about forty kilometres away, receives those from Algeciras. Fares vary with the date: we do not give them.
