Arriving in Tangier: ports, airport, station

Tangier has two very different ports, an airport and a high-speed railway station. Knowing where you arrive changes all your plans: here is how to reach the centre from each, with the published prices and their date.

The essentials in 30 seconds
  • Tanger Ville is the port in the centre, at the foot of the medina; ferries from Tarifa arrive there.
  • Tanger Med is about 50 km north-east of the city, some fifty minutes by road: plan a transfer.
  • Ibn Battouta Airport is about twelve kilometres south-west of the centre; a direct bus (40 dirhams) goes to the railway station.
  • Tanger Ville station is the terminus of the Al Boraq high-speed train.

Via Tanger Ville port

Ferries from Tarifa arrive at the port of Tanger Ville, right in the centre: the crossing takes less than an hour, according to Ferryhopper (article of 12 August 2022). Leaving the port, you can walk up to the medina and the Petit Socco; a petit taxi is useful if you have heavy luggage or are staying in the new town.

Via Tanger Med

Ferries from Algeciras, and the long routes from Barcelona, Sète or Genoa, dock at Tanger Med, according to the same article. The port is about 50 km north-east of the city, some fifty minutes by road. Check the arrival port on your ticket: the two ports have nothing in common, and the article itself contradicts itself about Tarifa. The price of a transfer between Tanger Med and the centre is not documented here: agree on it before getting into a grand taxi.

Via the airport

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is about 12 km south-west of the city centre. Bus: since June 2024, a direct bus has linked the airport to Tanger Ville station, with one departure an hour and a fare of 40 dirhams, stopping notably at the Al Hassani complex, avenue Moulay Ismail and the Nejma roundabout (Bladi.net, article of 3 June 2024). Taxi: the blog vanupied.com (updated on 3 May 2026) gives a fare of 100 dirhams by day and 150 dirhams at night to the centre, for a journey of about 20 minutes; we have not found an official fare table to confirm it: ask the price before setting off.

By train

Tanger Ville station is near the bay, east of the centre. It is the terminus of the Al Boraq high-speed train, which reaches Casablanca in about 2 h 10 via Kenitra and Rabat (Seat61, accessed 16 October 2026). Prices vary with the date: see oncf-voyages.ma. From the station, a petit taxi takes you to the medina; the airport bus also leaves from the station.

Which arrival point for which trip?

For a day in Tangier from Spain, Tanger Ville is the simplest: you arrive at the foot of the medina and can follow our 3-hour route. By car from Algeciras, you will usually arrive at Tanger Med: include the drive to the city in your day. By plane or train, plan to reach your accommodation before starting your visits.

Limits of this guide

The bus and taxi prices come from sources from 2024 and 2026 (a single blog for the taxi); they may have changed. Ferry timetables and the price of a transfer from Tanger Med are not documented here. Nothing has been checked on site by TangerLocal.
