Tangier guide

Tangier–Tarifa by ferry: crossing the strait

Only about fifteen kilometres separate Tangier and Tarifa. The fast ferry links the two shores in about an hour and arrives right in the centre of Tangier. Here is how to plan it.

The essentials in 30 seconds
  • Ferries from Tarifa arrive at the port of Tanger Ville, right in the centre.
  • Those from Algeciras arrive at Tanger Med, about forty kilometres away.
  • Passport required, and formalities to check depending on your nationality.

Tanger Ville or Tanger Med?

It is the first thing to check. The port of Tanger Ville is at the foot of the medina: you get off and you are in town. Tanger Med is a large port far to the east of the city: you then need to plan a road transfer. For a visit or a day trip, Tanger Ville is by far the most practical.

The crossing

From Tarifa, fast ferries take about an hour. Several companies operate the route, with timetables that vary by season and weather: wind can cause cancellations. Book online with the companies, especially in summer and during the holidays.

Formalities

You cross the border at the port. You need a passport, and a visa for certain nationalities, in either direction: Spain is part of the Schengen area. Allow some margin, as the wait can be long in high season.

A day in Tangier from Spain

Leaving Tarifa early, you can see the essentials of Tangier in a day: the Grand Socco, the medina, the Kasbah, Café Hafa, then back in the late afternoon. Our "3 hours in Tangier" itinerary is designed for this.

And the other way round

From Tangier, Tarifa makes a lovely day trip: a small Andalusian town, its ramparts and its beaches. Remember the time difference: depending on the season, Spain is one or two hours ahead of Morocco, which affects your return times.
