The essentials in 30 seconds
  • 3 hours: the medina and the Kasbah on foot, for a stopover or a first look.
  • 1 day: the old town in the morning, the Marshan and Café Hafa in the late afternoon.
  • 2 days: the city, then Cape Spartel, the Caves of Hercules and the Atlantic coast.
  • 3 days: add a day trip (Asilah, Tetouan or Chefchaouen).
  • 4 to 7 days: Tangier as a base for northern Morocco, or a night in Chefchaouen.

The short answer

Two days are enough for the essentials of Tangier: one day for the medina, the Kasbah and the Marshan, one day for Cape Spartel and the Atlantic coast. With three days, you add a day trip. Beyond that, Tangier becomes a base for northern Morocco. The city also works very well for a stopover of a few hours, by ferry from Tarifa or on a cruise, because Tanger Ville port is at the foot of the medina.

A few hours: a stopover

In three hours on foot, you can walk up from the port to the Grand Socco, cross the medina and the Petit Socco, then reach the Kasbah and its viewpoint over the Strait. That is our 3-hour route, designed for a stopover or a first look. If you arrive on a cruise, our article Tangier on a stopover helps you check your port and the time you have.

One day

One day lets you see the old town without rushing: the medina and souks in the morning, the Kasbah and its museum, then the Marshan, the Phoenician tombs and a tea at Café Hafa in the late afternoon, facing the Strait. Everything is on foot, without a car. The details are in our itinerary One day in Tangier without a car.

Two days

On the second day, you leave the city: Cape Spartel, about 13 km away, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, the Caves of Hercules and Achakar beach, with a stop in the Perdicaris park forest. You need a taxi, a car or an organised tour. Our itinerary Two days: the city, then the ocean plans both days.

Three days: a day trip

With a third day, choose a day trip. Asilah, about 45 km away, is around 45 minutes by train (Rome2Rio, October 2026) and can be visited in half a day, or a full day with the beach. Tetouan, about an hour's drive away, has a medina listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chefchaouen is about two hours' drive away: doable in a day, but more enjoyable with a night there. Our articles Asilah, Tetouan and Chefchaouen describe each trip.

Four days to a week

A week lets you take your time: three days in Tangier, then Asilah, Tetouan and one or two nights in Chefchaouen. With the Al Boraq high-speed train, Rabat is 1 h 20 away and Casablanca 2 h 10: Tangier can also be the starting point of a wider tour. See our article on the Al Boraq train.

What changes how long you need

The season matters: in winter, days are short and rain is frequent, so plan indoor visits; in summer, the heat invites you to slow down in the middle of the day. So does the day of the week: the Kasbah museum is listed as closed on Tuesdays on its official page, and the American Legation's website gives contradictory weekend hours. Finally, your point of arrival: from Tanger Med or the airport, allow time for the transfer. Our guide When to come gives the climate month by month.
