Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules: a half-day on the Atlantic coast

Cape Spartel, the Caves of Hercules and Achakar beach can be visited together in half a day, about fifteen kilometres west of Tangier. Here is how to plan the outing, by taxi or by car.

The essentials in 30 seconds
  • You need a taxi or a car to get there.
  • Combine it with the Caves of Hercules and Achakar beach.
  • Come at the end of the day for the sunset.

Why go

Cape Spartel is the north-western tip of Africa. On one side lies the Atlantic, on the other begins the strait leading to the Mediterranean. The lighthouse, first lit in 1864, overlooks the rocks and the forest. On a clear day, you can make out the Spanish coast.

How to get there

From the centre of Tangier, you reach the cape by the road through the residential districts to the west, then along the forest of Perdicaris Park. By grand taxi, agree the return price and the waiting time before setting off. By car, allow about twenty minutes depending on traffic.

A half-day on the coast

The most pleasant option is to string them together: a stop at Perdicaris Park, Cape Spartel, then the Caves of Hercules and Achakar beach, a little further south. Finish with the sunset over the Atlantic.

Tips

The wind blows hard at the cape: bring a jacket, even in summer. At weekends, the road and viewpoints are very busy. Access to the inside of the lighthouse is not guaranteed: check on site.
